Canned Tomatoes are this weeks foodfight
Why? because they are a great base for winter slow cooked casseroles and a good cupboard staple. Ideally, I would make my own and store them in glass jars, alas this years crop was pathetic. In a perfect world I would also buy organic tomatoes, but not at almost $1 each! Sometimes when buying food you have to choose your food battles. Opt for tomatoes with no added spices and herbs, because here is where you open up an entirely new ‘can of worms’! - so to speak..
This week was an interesting find with almost 80% containing the same ingredients: Roughly 60% tomatoes, tomato juice, Acidity regulator/Food Acid (E330/330). I won’t go into the in’s and out’s of Acidity regulators or Citric Acid E330/330 in this post. I will mention it is does occur naturally, however the process of adding it to another product is not natural. Adopting a ‘less is more’ way of thinking will be far more beneficial for your body and your digestion.
You will notice our top two picks are organic, which contains only organic tomatoes and the juice. Simple… just two organic products.
The two in the grey shading are a no-go. They have adopted the old ‘filler’ and ‘thickener 1422’ tricks.. Forget these gems, especially when there are so many to choose from.
